It all happened so fast. Suddenly the swallow was falling from the nest, tumbling – then taking wing and flying, but only just, over the cat’s head, and coming straight as an arrow at the window above Matt’s head. The clunk when the little swallow hit the glass was sickening. He fell at Matt’s feet, and lay there. Still.

The cat was running across the yard towards Matt, towards the dead swallow.

Matt was not going to let it happen. He was on his feet and yelling at him. The cat ran off, but only as far as the wheelbarrow under the nest, where he sat, waiting again. He had not given up. The family of swallows was wheeling and screeching above the yard, swooping, diving. They had not given up either.
